The Subjunctive Mood
The **subjunctive** uses the **base form** of the verb (no -s, no -ed) after certain expressions.
**After verbs of demand/suggestion/recommendation:**
insist, suggest, recommend, demand, request, propose, require
- The committee **insisted** that he **attend** the meeting. (not "attends")
- She **suggested** that the policy **be revised**. (not "is revised")
**After adjectives: essential, vital, important, necessary, crucial**
- It is **essential** that every student **submit** the form. (not "submits")
- It is **important** that he **be** on time. (not "is")
**Fixed expressions:**
- **If need be** = if necessary
- **Be that as it may** = despite that
- **Come what may** = no matter what happens
- **Far be it from me** to criticise, but...
- **God forbid** / **Heaven forbid**
- **Suffice it to say** = it is enough to say
**Were-subjunctive (formal "if"):**
- If I **were** the Prime Minister... (not "was" in formal English)
- **Were** he to resign, the party would collapse.
Examples
The principal insisted that every student wear the uniform.
It is crucial that the country invest more in renewable energy.
💡 The subjunctive is more common in American English. British English often uses "should": "She suggested that he should attend." Both are correct at C2 level.
