The Subjunctive Mood

The **subjunctive** uses the **base form** of the verb (no -s, no -ed) after certain expressions. **After verbs of demand/suggestion/recommendation:** insist, suggest, recommend, demand, request, propose, require - The committee **insisted** that he **attend** the meeting. (not "attends") - She **suggested** that the policy **be revised**. (not "is revised") **After adjectives: essential, vital, important, necessary, crucial** - It is **essential** that every student **submit** the form. (not "submits") - It is **important** that he **be** on time. (not "is") **Fixed expressions:** - **If need be** = if necessary - **Be that as it may** = despite that - **Come what may** = no matter what happens - **Far be it from me** to criticise, but... - **God forbid** / **Heaven forbid** - **Suffice it to say** = it is enough to say **Were-subjunctive (formal "if"):** - If I **were** the Prime Minister... (not "was" in formal English) - **Were** he to resign, the party would collapse.
