Conditionals: Second and Third

**Second Conditional** → Imaginary situations NOW or in the FUTURE (unlikely but possible) **Structure:** If + past simple, would + base verb - If I **won** the lottery, I **would buy** a house in Goa. - If she **spoke** better English, she **would get** promoted. **Third Conditional** → Imaginary situations in the PAST (impossible, it didn't happen) **Structure:** If + past perfect, would have + past participle - If I **had studied** harder, I **would have passed** the MIT exam. - If it **hadn't rained**, we **would have gone** to the beach. **Key difference:** - 2nd: "If I had money..." (I don't have money now, but imagine if I did) - 3rd: "If I had had money..." (I didn't have money then, and it's too late now)

Examples

If I lived in Zurich, I would see snow every winter.

If she had taken the train, she would have arrived on time.

💡 Many learners often mix conditionals. "If I would have..." is incorrect! The "if" clause never has "would".
