A2 Grammar
Simple Past Tense
The Simple Past Tense is used for actions that started AND finished in the past.
**Regular verbs:** Add **-ed** to the base verb
- walk → walked, play → played, cook → cooked
- If the verb ends in "e": live → lived, dance → danced
- If it ends in consonant + "y": study → studied, carry → carried
**Irregular verbs:** These don't follow the -ed rule (you need to memorise them!)
- go → went, eat → ate, buy → bought, see → saw
- come → came, take → took, make → made, give → gave
**Negatives:** Use **did not (didn't)** + base verb
- I didn't go to school yesterday.
- She didn't eat breakfast.
**Questions:** Use **Did** + subject + base verb?
- Did you watch the match last night?
- Did she finish her homework?
Examples
I went to the temple yesterday.
She cooked pasta for dinner last night.
Did you take the bus to office?
💡 Common common English error: "I didn't went" is wrong! After "didn't", always use the BASE form: "I didn't go."
